LIFE DRAWING: SESSION 1
Looking back at some of my last blogs, I’m not sure it’s fair for me to ramble on about how much I want to improve at drawing and yet do nothing to change. One of my favourite things I started going to a few years ago were the life drawing sessions hosted by the GUALD society at Glasgow University (see them here), however after a few sessions and due to the difficulty of consistently securing a spot, I stopped going. I actually enjoyed these sessions not just for the drawing practice, but also as a way of practising mindfulness.
The aura in a room full of people all sketching along to quiet background music is actually extremely meditative; when you're focused on a detailed task in a room of others doing the same it’s extremely easy to switch off your thoughts to anything outside the room. It might also help that everyone is looking at a nude model in front of them, you’d look a bit unusual if you weren’t drawing!
So, I want to try and commit to regularly attending the sessions again; even if it involves sneaking in illegally, I know the girl that runs them now! I’ll spread all the output between a couple of blog posts to see the progress between sessions. When I’ve regularly attended them in the past these improvements have always been clear to see and a really nice marker of the practice actually having some output. So, here are my drawings from the first session; there are 30 second poses all the way up to 15 minute poses and the drawings are all captioned with the timings…
